NCK Announces Fresh Requirements for Nurses and Midwives
Why Indexing Matters
Indexing is the official process by which the NCK records and tracks every student enrolled in nursing or midwifery programs. It ensures proper accreditation, prevents fraud, and aligns training with Kenya’s national healthcare workforce standards.
Who Is Affected?
The notice outlines requirements for four distinct groups:
- Basic Nursing and Midwifery Students (Kenya) – New entrants must apply online through approved institutions, meet minimum entry criteria, and complete their indexing forms individually.
- Upgrading Students – Licensed nurses or midwives advancing their qualifications must follow similar online submissions and meet specific program requirements.
- Higher Diploma Trainees – Candidates pursuing specialized fields must meet diploma-specific entry standards as detailed on the NCK portal.
- Foreign-Trained Students – Overseas graduates face more extensive checks, including credential verification by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), regulatory confirmations, and certified translations of non-English documents.
Key Requirements for Foreign Students
Applicants trained outside Kenya must provide:
- A completed NTOK application form and verification statements from their training institutions.
- Validation of registration/licensing from the relevant regulatory authority.
- Academic credential assessment by the KNQA where applicable.
- Certified translations of any non-English documents.
Implications for Training Institutions
NCK has emphasized that all approved nursing and midwifery schools must ensure compliance or risk penalties. Institutions are required to submit student lists electronically and confirm that entrants meet program prerequisites before indexing.
