NPS Announces Crackdown on PSVs After Surge in Fatal Road Accidents

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced a nationwide crackdown on Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) following a sharp increase in deadly road accidents across Kenya.

Speaking on Sunday, NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said traffic officers will step up speed checks, verify NTSA-issued licenses, conduct anti-drunk-driving operations, and remove unauthorized vehicle lights. Officers will also inspect PSV Saccos for compliance, crack down on overloading, and take unroadworthy vehicles off the road.

“The vast majority of these accidents are preventable if road users change their behavior by avoiding speeding, dangerous overtaking, drink-driving, overloading, driver fatigue, and careless road crossing,” Nyaga said.

The announcement comes after a tragic accident in Kisumu’s Mamboleo area claimed 25 lives. A school bus overturned after failing to navigate the dangerous Coptic roundabout a known black spot. Nineteen passengers died on the spot, while six more passed away while receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Another deadly crash occurred on Saturday, August 9, when a PSV collided with a lorry at Korompoi Global Estate near Kitengela on the Namanga-Isinya Highway, killing seven people.

Nyaga confirmed that the NPS, working with other state agencies, will carry out thorough investigations into the causes of these recent tragedies.
