Terror in Kwale: ‘Panga Boys’ Gang Unleashes Daylight Attacks on Residents and Businesses

Panic gripped residents of Msambweni, Kwale County, on Saturday after a violent machete-wielding gang known as the “Panga Boys” launched coordinated attacks on locals and businesses in broad daylight.

The gang, composed mostly of young men, claimed they were protesting the alleged killing of a 29-year-old man who was fatally stabbed the day before. However, their so-called demonstration quickly turned into chaos, as they used the moment to rob shops and assault innocent residents.

Amateur video footage circulating online shows the gang raiding business premises in Msambweni town, leaving a trail of destruction. Eyewitnesses reported that the group moved from one shop to another, threatening traders and looting goods as terrified onlookers ran for safety.

Among those caught in the attack was journalist Brivian Simiyu, who recounted a harrowing ordeal after encountering six gang members while heading home from work in Diani.

“One of them brandished a machete and came after me. I tried to flee, but tripped and fell. They caught up and cut my ear despite my screams for help,” said Simiyu.

The gang’s return has sparked renewed fear in the region, with traders in Likoni also falling victim to a similar robbery just days earlier. CCTV footage showed a group breaking into a shop and making away with goods worth over Sh500,000.

“We are living in fear. We don’t even feel safe opening our businesses anymore. Where is the government?” a distressed trader asked.

Msambweni Sub-County Police Commander Ahmed Hilloh confirmed the arrest of two suspects linked to the attacks and noted that security operations have been intensified in the area. He also assured residents that patrols would be increased to restore calm.

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno echoed these sentiments, stating that the crackdown on criminal gangs had been escalated across the region.

As investigations continue, residents are calling for swift government intervention to dismantle these gangs and guarantee safety in both urban and rural communities across Kwale.
