The National Police Service (NPS) has addressed a shocking video circulating widely online that shows a police officer stepping on a civilian’s neck while the man lies helplessly on the ground.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the NPS acknowledged the incident and revealed that it took place in 2018. The Service added that the officer involved has already been identified and “appropriate action” was taken.

Police Denounce Use of Excessive Force

“The National Police Service has taken cognisance of a disturbing video circulating in the media, which shows a police officer assaulting a man lying on the ground,” read part of the NPS statement.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of Kenyans while carrying out its duties. “As a Service, we reaffirm our commitment to serve and protect while upholding constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms,” it added.

Graphic Video Sparks Online Outrage

The viral video, which gained traction on Monday, May 5, shows a police officer in uniform kicking a man on the neck before stepping on him while holding a firearm in one hand and a baton in the other. The crowd nearby watched in horror, with no one daring to intervene.

Kenyans React With Fury and Frustration

Social media users were quick to condemn the actions captured in the video:

  • Muli Brian said, “This is so wrong manze. Why is he harassing him instead of reporting him to the station?”
  • @SSBInsights tweeted, “Are those calling it an old video saying such actions are no longer punishable?”
  • Koroir Weldon, a security expert, added, “Even if the suspect is armed, there are lawful ways to arrest. This shows a need for constant retraining of officers.”
  • Ephraim Kokonya said, “Whether yesterday or tomorrow, treating someone like this is unacceptable.”

Public Demands Accountability

The incident has reignited long-standing concerns over police brutality in Kenya. Activists and citizens alike are now calling on the NPS to go beyond public statements and ensure transparency in disciplinary actions.

As the video continues to stir debate, many are urging for independent investigations and reforms within the force to prevent future incidents.
