Tragic Bar Shooting in Turbo
A police officer has been arrested after fatally shooting two individuals on the night of Thursday, June 26, at Kokwet Bar within the Juakali Center in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County.
The officer, identified as Erick Kirui from Tembelio Police Station in Moiben Sub County, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident and armed with an AK-47 rifle.
Victims Identified
According to a police report obtained by nairobiileo.co.ke, the victims included Caroline Malakwen whom Kirui was cohabiting with and Ignatius Kipchumba, popularly known as Mwala.
Malakwen was the proprietor of Kokwet Pub.
Another man, Antony Stephen Mbifa, was injured by a ricochet bullet and sustained a head injury. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Officer Disarmed While Fleeing
Officers from Sugoi Patrol Base and Jua Kali OCS arrived at the scene in time to disarm and arrest Kirui, who was attempting to flee.
“With reinforcement from other officers, he was disarmed and arrested while trying to escape the premises,” the report confirmed. Authorities recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with 22 rounds of ammunition.
Firearm Issued for Duty
The police also revealed that Kirui had been issued the firearm for official night duties. However, instead of reporting for duty, he allegedly took a boda boda and traveled to the bar where the incident occurred.
Bodies Moved to Eldoret Mortuary
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the MTRH Hospital mortuary in Eldoret pending post-mortem examinations.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the fatal shooting and the officer’s conduct leading up to the tragedy.
