Two police officers accused of shooting an unarmed hawker in Nairobi CBD have been identified as Masinde Baraza and Duncan Kiprono. The officers were captured on video confronting Boniface Mwangi Kariuki during Tuesday’s anti-government protests, sparking national outrage.

Where the Officers Are Being Held

The accused officers, both attached to Kileleshwa Police Station, are currently detained at Capitol Hill Police Station. They await arraignment following directives from the Inspector-General of Police.

According to NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, investigations began immediately after footage went viral. “The Inspector-General ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of the involved officer,” Nyaga said.

Victim in Critical Condition

The victim, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, is recuperating at Kenyatta National Hospital after undergoing emergency treatment at Bliss Medical Centre. Preliminary medical reports confirm that he suffered head injuries from a rubber bullet.

Footage reviewed by The Star shows the officers first confronting Mwangi on Moi Avenue, slapping and hitting him with a gun before one of them shot him in the head as he attempted to flee.

Public Outcry and Legal Representation

The shooting incident has drawn sharp criticism from Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and civil society groups. Legal representatives led by Felix Kiton arrived at Capitol Hill Police Station, expressing concerns about lack of access to the detained officers.

“We have not yet spoken to our clients or received official information about the charges,” Kiton said. He urged for due process to be followed in line with constitutional rights.

Protesters Demand Justice

The shooting occurred amidst ongoing demonstrations sparked by the death of Albert Ojwang, a teacher who died in police custody. Demonstrators have been calling for police accountability and justice for victims of brutality.

Earlier in the day, activist Hanifa Adan reported being attacked by goons during the protests. Protesters say these goons operated under police watch, targeting civilians and disrupting peaceful demonstrations.

Next Steps and Court Proceedings

The two officers are expected to appear in court by the end of the week. Meanwhile, authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations proceed.
