President William Ruto has dismissed Irungu Nyakera from his role as the Chairperson of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board.
In a gazette notice dated April 1, the President announced the appointment of Samuel Waweru Mwangi as Nyakera’s replacement, with a tenure of three years starting immediately.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 43 (1) (a) of the Tourism Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Samuel Waweru Mwangi to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 1st April, 2025. The appointment of Irungu Nyakera is revoked.”
The dismissal comes shortly after Nyakera stated he would not be attending the President’s tour of the Mt. Kenya region.
Nyakera’s Response
Reacting to the news, Nyakera expressed surprise but took a lighthearted approach, stating he felt “special” for being dismissed through a gazette notice.
On March 30, Nyakera had publicly announced that he would not join Ruto’s tour in Mt. Kenya, citing his ongoing studies at Oxford University in the UK.
Previous Roles
Before serving as KICC chair, Nyakera held the position of Chairperson at the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) before being reassigned.
His replacement, Samuel Waweru Mwangi, is expected to assume office immediately and serve for a three-year term.
