President William Ruto has led Kenyans in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on the morning of Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The pontiff died peacefully at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, following a period of illness.
In a heartfelt statement, President Ruto described the passing of Pope Francis as a profound loss to the global Christian community and the Catholic Church.

Kenyan Leaders Pay Tribute to Pope Francis
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua praised Pope Francis for his unwavering commitment to faith and his ability to inspire both Catholics and non-Catholics with his humility and wisdom.
“The Holy Father has left a big gap in the Church and the world. His contribution to Catholicism remains strong. We remember him fondly as a Pope who visited Kenya and prayed for our Nation,” he said.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi eulogized Pope Francis as “a shepherd of hope, peace, and unwavering faith,” emphasizing that his legacy will endure for generations.
Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, noted the pontiff’s devotion to peace, unity, and spiritual healing.
“His encyclicals, Evangelii Gaudium and Fratelli Tutti, reminded us to be agents of peace and fraternity. His life of service leaves a lasting legacy,” said Wetang’ula.
The ODM Party also issued a statement expressing its condolences, describing Pope Francis as a true servant of God who tirelessly advocated for peace and harmony in society.
