President William Ruto was unexpectedly hit by a flying shoe while addressing a crowd during his development tour in Migori County on Sunday, May 4.
In a video circulating online, the head of state was seen continuing with his speech even after being struck. The incident occurred at a public rally shortly after he attended an Interdenominational Prayer Service at Kadika Primary School in Suna East.
Development Projects Continue Despite Disruption
Undeterred by the surprise attack, President Ruto proceeded with his scheduled activities in the region. He officially opened the Suna East Sub-County Office and laid the foundation stone for the Suna West Technical and Vocational College.
“We are strengthening our local administration to ensure it is fully equipped to serve the people efficiently. This college will enhance access to technical training and empower the youth in the region,” Ruto stated during his address.
Later in the day, the President visited Kuria West where he launched the Kehancha Affordable Housing Project, which will feature 298 housing units.
“We are implementing a transformative development agenda that ensures no region is marginalized or left behind,” he emphasized.
Incident Overshadowed by MP’s Assassination
The shocking shoe incident comes just days after the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Were, who was gunned down by unknown assailants along Ngong Road in Nairobi on Wednesday, April 30.
According to reports, the MP was traveling with his bodyguard and driver when he was attacked shortly after leaving Parliament at around 7 PM.
ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale condemned the incident, stating, “The people of Kuria, that was uncalled for.”
Police investigations into both the MP’s killing and the Migori shoe-throwing incident are underway as tensions remain high in the region.
