Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo has engaged officials from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) in a consultative meeting aimed at addressing key issues affecting teachers and the education sector.

The meeting, which brought together representatives from all 21 KNUT branches in the Nyanza region, focused on strengthening the collaboration between the government and educators. Discussions centered on improving teachers’ welfare, enhancing service delivery in schools, and ensuring a secure and conducive learning environment.

Omollo acknowledged the vital role teachers play in shaping society, emphasizing that their contribution is often undervalued despite being crucial to the nation’s progress. He urged professionals, including teachers, to focus on solutions rather than dwelling on criticisms.

“The fact that you are educationists and teachers means that each Kenyan owes you gratitude and appreciation for what you do daily to make this country better,” Omollo stated.

He further noted that ongoing national conversations often highlight societal challenges but stressed that educators hold the key to molding responsible citizens.

“It is very easy to dismiss the role of the teacher while in reality, they bear the greatest burden in making society what it is,” he said.

The meeting underscores the government’s commitment to addressing challenges faced by teachers and ensuring that their concerns are heard. Teachers’ welfare remains a critical issue in the education sector, with unions frequently pushing for better working conditions, timely promotions, and improved remuneration.

By engaging with KNUT officials, the government aims to create a framework for continued dialogue, ensuring that teachers receive the necessary support to effectively carry out their duties.
