Ruto Confirms Land Donation During Kisumu Tour
Speaking on Thursday, May 29, during his official visit to Kisumu, President Ruto announced that the donated land would facilitate the construction of 750 housing units under the government’s Affordable Housing Program.
“Today, I have come to Kisumu with Raila to launch another affordable housing program. Raila Odinga has given us five acres of his land so that we can build affordable houses for the people of Kisumu to benefit. On behalf of the Government of Kenya, I thank him for the generous gesture,” said the Head of State.
Raila Odinga’s Evolving Stance on Affordable Housing
This move comes just months after Raila expressed mixed views about the project. In a televised interview on February 4, 2025, the former Prime Minister stated that the Affordable Housing initiative was originally proposed in Azimio la Umoja’s manifesto.
“Affordable Housing is not a bad idea. In fact, we had it in our Azimio manifesto. They (Kenya Kwanza) copied it from us. We appreciate that shelter is among the five basic needs outlined in the constitution,” he remarked.
Criticism Over Implementation
Despite supporting the idea in principle, Raila previously criticized the Ruto administration for what he termed as a lack of a comprehensive plan. He raised concerns over the displacement of residents without proper decanting sites and the uniform design of the houses.
“It should not be one-size-fits-all. In some areas, you build bungalows, and in others, the community contributes land and labor while the government provides materials. There must be citizen engagement to ensure the program benefits those in need,” Raila emphasized.
Political Significance Ahead of Madaraka Day
President Ruto’s tour of Nyanza region, which includes Kisumu and Homa Bay counties, comes just days ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled to take place in Homa Bay. The symbolic collaboration between Ruto and Raila could signal a softening of political tensions in the region.
This housing project launch marks the second major initiative in Kisumu by the Kenya Kwanza government within a month, signaling increased attention to the region’s development needs.
What This Means for Kenyans
The donation of land by Raila Odinga and the rapid launch of 750 housing units demonstrate the potential for political cooperation to fast-track development in Kenya. For Kisumu residents, the project promises jobs, homes, and improved infrastructure.
As the government pushes forward with its affordable housing agenda, this development may serve as a model for other leaders to work together in addressing pressing national issues.
