Rangers directors appear to be growing impatient as 49ers Enterprises attempt to complete their takeover at Ibrox before the end of April.
Momentum on the pitch has taken a heavy hit, with the Gers suffering defeat against Hibernian, and Jack Butland back under the spotlight at Rangers after another blunder between the sticks.
While times have been tough at Ibrox over the last few months, especially towards the end of Philippe Clement‘s reign, fans have remained positive given the incoming takeover by the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh.
Some supporters have become concerned over the lack of noise coming out of Glasgow about the deal, with nothing being said for a few weeks, but the Daily Record‘s Keith Jackson reports rumours of a potential collapse are wide of the mark.
However, there are certainly some struggles when it comes to completing the deal in a suitable timeframe, and journalists Scott Burns and Jackson have explained why directors are becoming frustrated.
Rangers takeover stuck in legal black hole
Speaking via Record Sport’s Hotline Live (7 April), with some fans concerned by the lack of noise at Ibrox, Burns said: “I’m told that the deal is quite close to the finishing line.
“But what I’m also told is that there are maybe some Rangers directors who are getting a bit frustrated at the time taken to complete this deal. Not that it’s on the brink or anything.”
Keith Jackson added: “I’m sure there are. You’ve got Dave King, John Bennett and Barry Scott who are looking to sell outright. Their whole shareholding is going to go, and that would take Andrew Cavenagh and the Americans up to about 25 per cent.
“Then you’ve got separate, and this is why it’s been a really complicated deal from the start. It was never as simple as X going to Y and saying, ‘I’ll take your shares,’ as they managed to do at Leeds.”
Barry Ferguson’s future is on the line as Ibrox takeover awaits
Football Insider verdict
Supporters will not be the only ones eager for the takeover to be completed, with Ferguson likely fighting to keep his spot at Rangers permanently despite only being brought in on an interim basis.
Rafa Benitez is one of the names on the list for Rangers, with Steven Gerrard, Russell Martin and Derek McInnes all linked, but nothing can be decided without the new owners in charge.
Manager | Games | Won | Drawn | Lost |
Barry Ferguson | 7 | 4 | 0 | 3 |
An influx of cash could also see quite the injection ahead of the summer transfer window, with Nico Raskin, Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers all being linked with moves away, but they will need to be replaced.
Of course, none of these decisions are likely to be made until the season is over, or at least until the Gers have either been knocked out of the Europa League or won it, but the new owners will have a lot to do in very little time.
It is understandable why, not just fans, but also directors are getting disgruntled with the current ongoing behind-the-scenes, but if the rumours are to be believed, the takeover will be completed very soon.
