Ringtone in Trouble Again? Gospel Artist Faces Sh50M Land Fraud Charges

Gospel singer Alex Nyachonga Apoko, widely known as Ringtone, found himself at the centre of a legal storm on Thursday, May 15, as he appeared before Milimani Law Courts over a contentious Sh50 million land saga in Karen.

Accusations of Forgery and False Affidavit

Ringtone and his co-accused Alfred Juma Ayora are facing three serious charges: conspiracy to defraud, forgery, and perjury. Prosecutors allege that the two plotted to illegally seize a parcel of land belonging to businesswoman Terresia Adhiambo Odhiambo.

The land in question, situated in Nairobi’s upmarket Karen area, measures approximately 0.1908 hectares. The accused are said to have falsely claimed ownership through adverse possession, purporting they had lived on the property for over 20 years — a claim investigators dismissed as fabricated.

False Affidavit Before Advocate

According to court records, on February 28, 2023, Ringtone and Ayora allegedly swore a false affidavit before Advocate S.M. Katonya, asserting their long-term residence on the land. The affidavit was allegedly presented in an attempt to establish unlawful ownership.

Denial and Bail Plea

Both Ringtone and his co-accused denied the charges and pleaded for leniency in bail terms. The matter is now set for a bail determination on Monday next week by Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego.

Not His First Run-In With the Law

Ringtone has previously been in the spotlight for controversial public stunts and legal confrontations. This latest accusation further complicates his public image as a gospel artist and entrepreneur.

The public and fans alike await Monday’s ruling, which could determine whether Ringtone remains a free man or continues to battle his case behind bars.
