President William Ruto has condoled with the family of Albert Ojwang, the teacher and blogger who died in police custody, through a phone call and a Ksh2 million donation to his father.

Speaking at an emotional event in Homa Bay on Tuesday, June 16, Ojwang’s father revealed that the Head of State had personally reached out to him last week to offer his condolences following his son’s tragic death.

“I want to thank the President for taking my son Albert as his own and feeling the pain of our family. He called me and shared in our grief,” Ojwang’s father said.

Governor Wanga Delivers Ruto’s Message

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who was also present, confirmed that she had facilitated the communication and was delivering the President’s donation on his behalf.

“The President called Ojwang’s father after I shared his contact. He conveyed his sorrow as a parent and sent me here today with Ksh2 million for the family,” Wanga announced.

Raila Also Reaches Out

Ojwang’s father also disclosed that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga had phoned him from abroad to express his sympathy.

“Raila Odinga, who is our elder, also reached out while away and sent his condolences,” he stated.

Governor Wanga to Build Home for Ojwang’s Father

In a touching gesture, Governor Wanga pledged to construct a new home for Ojwang’s father, saying it was something Albert would have done.

“Albert would have built a house for his father. I will now build a two-bedroom house worth Ksh1.5 million to honor his memory,” Wanga said.

The Case Behind Ojwang’s Death

Ojwang, who was operating under the X account “Pixel Pioneer”, was arrested on June 7 following a defamation complaint by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. The blogger was accused of publishing false claims about Lagat’s wealth and internal police dealings.

Ojwang was later found dead at Nairobi Central Police Station, sparking national outrage and calls for police accountability. Following public pressure, DIG Lagat stepped aside pending the outcome of investigations.

Justice for Ojwang

The family, alongside a growing online community rallying behind #JusticeForOjwang, has called for a transparent investigation into the incident and protection of whistleblowers and bloggers across Kenya.

President Ruto’s donation and call are being viewed as a rare gesture of empathy from the highest office, even as questions linger about the circumstances of Ojwang’s death.
