Clean-Up Campaign Kicks Off in Nairobi’s Heart
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has flagged off a major clean-up initiative starting with the Central Business District (CBD), unveiling newly installed dustbins as part of his plan to improve the city’s sanitation and aesthetics.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 21, Sakaja reminded residents that maintaining a clean environment is a shared duty. “Cleanliness is a collective responsibility. As the Green Army continues their commendable work, we must all support them by avoiding littering,” he emphasized.
Dustbins to Expand Beyond CBD
Governor Sakaja revealed that the dustbin rollout will first cover the CBD before extending into residential estates across the county. The black bins, branded with the city’s slogan “Let’s Make Nairobi Work,” are designed to offer a visible and accessible way for pedestrians to dispose of waste.

Guards Deployed to Deter Vandalism
To prevent theft and vandalism of the newly installed dustbins, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria disclosed that officers will be stationed around the clock.
“These bins belong to the people of Nairobi. Anyone caught stealing or damaging them will be held accountable. We’re determined to stop scrap metal theft and public asset destruction,” said Mosiria.
Strict Penalties for Littering and Spitting
The county administration has vowed to crack down on littering and public spitting, with offenders facing arrest and fines under the Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Act.
“Residents who spit phlegm or drop trash in undesignated areas will be fined up to Ksh10,000 or prosecuted,” Mosiria warned.
A Greener Nairobi in Sight
As the initiative gains traction, the county government hopes to inspire Nairobians to actively participate in creating a cleaner and more environmentally responsible capital.
“This is our city. Let’s support the Green Army, use the bins, and take pride in Nairobi,” Governor Sakaja urged.
