Two congregants have died and 57 others rescued from the compound of a controversial church in Opapo village, Rongo, Migori County, in an incident that has shocked locals and raised concerns over alleged cultic practices.
According to police, the case came to light after a family took their ailing son to the St Joseph Missions of Messiah in Africa for prayers. Tragically, the man died on the way, and his body was taken to the church compound around 8 pm on March 27.
The following day, the deceased’s mother obtained a burial permit from a local assistant chief—who later admitted he was unaware of the exact burial location. With the document in hand, the woman and a few church members proceeded to bury the body within the church premises, claiming it was part of their religious rites.
Some family members, however, expressed deep concerns, alleging that the deceased had been influenced by radical teachings from the church. One family member had previously reported the matter to the police, prompting a visit to the church. It remains unclear what action was taken at the time.
Authorities have since launched a thorough investigation to establish the true cause of death. An autopsy is planned, and detectives are also questioning the circumstances surrounding the burial and the wellbeing of those still associated with the church.
No official response has been given by the church leadership regarding the incident.
Cases of suspected occultism in the country have been increasing, with several reported incidents involving loss of lives, property, and extreme indoctrination.
Police Rescue 57 From the Church Compound
Following the tip-off, police launched a raid and rescued 57 individuals from the church compound. The conditions under which the congregants were living remain under investigation as authorities try to determine whether they were being held against their will.
Residents of Rongo have urged the government to intensify scrutiny of religious organizations operating in the region to curb potential exploitation and prevent future tragedies.
This incident draws parallels with past controversial church practices in Kenya, underscoring the urgent need for regulation and oversight.
