Nairobi, Kenya – Kariobangi North Member of County Assembly (MCA), Joel Munuve, has passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kiambu County, the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker has confirmed.

Munuve passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. News of his sudden demise has shocked Nairobi’s political scene and left residents of Kariobangi North in mourning.
Among the first leaders to pay tribute was former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who expressed heartfelt condolences through his social media platforms.
“Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve has passed on. My sincere condolences to his family, the entire Nairobi County Assembly, and Nairobi County Government fraternities. May the Almighty God give you strength, comfort, and hope during this difficult period. RIP,” Sonko wrote.
Munuve became a prominent figure in late 2023 after leading a bold campaign to collect signatures for the impeachment of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. He accused the governor of presiding over a dysfunctional county government plagued by corruption and poor service delivery.
At the heart of the impeachment calls were delays in bursary disbursements, questionable revenue collection practices, and what Munuve described as the rising influence of cartels within City Hall.
“The fact that the governor claims the NIS is collecting revenue is shameless. The governor does not even know who is collecting revenue,” Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai had stated in support of Munuve’s concerns.
However, Governor Sakaja dismissed the impeachment efforts as political theatrics, urging MCAs to unite in service delivery rather than engaging in divisive politics.
“We will not be distracted by naysayers. Our focus is on delivering what we promised. We have a mandate, and we don’t have time for rumors. Our priority is to work for our people, not to engage in gossip,” Sakaja said in response to the allegations.
The passing of Joel Munuve marks a major loss for the Nairobi County Assembly and his constituents in Kariobangi North. Plans for his burial and tributes from colleagues are expected in the coming days.
