Siaya County was plunged into mourning on Sunday morning after a fatal shooting incident at Ng’iya Police Post claimed the lives of two police officers.

Officer Allegedly Kills Superior

The tragic event unfolded at around 6:00 a.m. when Constable Martin Mwendwa allegedly shot and killed his superior, Corporal Chesise, the officer in charge of the post.

According to preliminary police reports, Mwendwa entered the corporal’s residence armed with a G3 rifle and opened fire, striking him fatally in the chest and arms.

Deadly Chase Ends in More Bloodshed

As the incident triggered alarm within the station, responding officers quickly acted to contain the situation. Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula confirmed that Mwendwa attempted to flee toward Ng’iya Girls’ High School.

He was intercepted by officers during the chase and fatally shot after a brief confrontation.

Mental Health or Personal Dispute?

While a personal dispute is suspected, police have not ruled out a mental health crisis as the motive for the attack.

“The matter is under investigation, and we are keen to establish the underlying cause. We are not ruling out any possibilities, including psychological distress,” said Commander Wafula.

The bodies of both officers were transferred to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue.

Rising Mental Health Concerns in Police Service

This incident brings renewed attention to the growing concern over mental health in Kenya’s security forces. Experts have called for regular psychological assessments and support structures for officers across the country.
