Chelsea’s owners have faced intense scrutiny as questions continue to be asked about their handling of the club’s finances.

BlueCo, which is spearheaded by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s Behdad Eghbali, has spent more than £1.5billion on new signings since taking over in May 2022.

However, the ownership group has so far failed to deliver success on the field, with the London giants’ current fourth-place position putting them on course for their best Premier League finish since the takeover was completed.

Chelsea have released their latest accounts for 2023-24, showing their overall revenue fell from £513million to £469million last season, while their underlying losses dropped from £249million to £214million.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the club have lost around £1billion at the operating level over the past five years.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for 2023-24.

Chelsea set for £200m hit in new blow

Borson revealed Chelsea are likely to lose another £200million at the operating level this season.

He told Football Insider: “What you’ve got here is really a level of spending and operating loss that’s pretty unprecedented.

“You are talking about close to £1billion in the last five years at the operating level, so their core business before you take into account things like player sales and asset sales, they have done about £1billion of loss in five years.

“That is a lot. They are likely to do another £200million this year without the front-of-shirt sponsor.

“It will be helped a little bit by the participation fee from the Club World Cup.

“That will offset some of the issues, but there are also real costs associated with the Club World Cup.”

Chelsea want to sign ‘next John Terry’ after January bid

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Chelsea want to sign “the next John Terry” to resolve their defensive issues this summer.

Enzo Maresca’s side remain interested in Nottingham Forest centre-back Murillo after seeing a late bid turned down for him in the January transfer window.

Forest are determined to keep hold of Murillo this summer as they hope to be playing Champions League football next season.
