Super Metro’s Troubled Past
This latest accident comes just months after Super Metro Sacco made headlines for the wrong reasons. In March 2025, the Sacco was suspended by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) following the death of a passenger after an altercation with a conductor over a Ksh 30 fare difference.

The passenger, who had only Ksh 50 for an Ksh 80 fare, was reportedly forced out, leading to a tragic outcome. NTSA’s immediate action included suspending the Sacco’s operations and ordering all Super Metro vehicles to undergo thorough inspection before resuming service.
Operations Temporarily Restored
Later, the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) temporarily revoked the NTSA’s suspension, allowing Super Metro vehicles to return to service. The decision sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some commuters threatening to boycott the Sacco until accountability was ensured.
Mounting Public Concern
The latest accident has reignited public concern over matatu safety in Kenya, especially in Nairobi and surrounding areas. Kenyans have taken to social media to express frustration over increasing cases of reckless driving, mistreatment of passengers, and impunity among public service vehicle crews.
NTSA Reports Over 5,800 Road Crash Cases in 2025
According to new statistics released by the NTSA, 5,856 people were involved in road crashes between January 1 and March 31, 2025. This marked a decrease of 1,908 cases compared to the same period in 2024.
Despite the drop, 1,139 lives were lost only slightly lower than the 1,166 fatalities reported during the same timeframe last year. An additional 3,316 people suffered serious injuries, while 2,693 sustained minor injuries.
The rising number of matatu-related accidents has triggered calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and thorough vetting of PSV operators and crew members.
