A key suspect in the murder of British businessman Campbell Scott has reportedly died at Kenyatta National Hospital after sustaining a self-inflicted neck stab wound.
Authorities identified the suspect as Samuel Musembi, who had been on the run and was staying with a friend in Dandora when the tragic incident occurred. Musembi, believed to be the driver who transported Scott’s body from Pipeline, Nairobi, to Makongo Forest in Makueni, was found dead at the friend’s residence earlier this week.
According to police, Musembi was left alone at the house on Tuesday morning when his friend left for work. When the friend returned and found the door locked from the inside, he forced his way in and discovered Musembi lying on a bed, unconscious with foam around his mouth and blood oozing from his neck. Initially taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, he was later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Musembi first attempted to poison himself before resorting to stabbing his neck when the poisoning failed. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had released images of three wanted suspects connected to Scott’s murder just a week ago, with Musembi among them.
Campbell Scott, a senior director at FICO, had arrived in Nairobi for a business conference on February 14. Reported missing on February 16, his body was found by herders in Makongo Forest along the Wote-Machakos highway on February 22. Initial speculations on the motive behind Scott’s murder have evolved, with emerging reports suggesting he might have fallen victim to a ruthless criminal syndicate targeting wealthy tourists and expatriates. According to these reports, the gang uses online dating platforms to lure victims, deploying female accomplices to arrange meetings at rented flats, where unsuspecting targets are ambushed and extorted for financial information—sometimes with fatal consequences.
Police have confirmed that investigations into Musembi’s death are ongoing. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing their search for the remaining suspects in Campbell Scott’s murder.
