Teachers Rejoice as Nancy Macharia Exits TSC: “She Was a Tyrant”

As Dr. Nancy Macharia’s tenure as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer officially comes to an end, thousands of teachers have taken to social media to express relief and, in some cases, celebration.

Mixed Legacy of the Outgoing CEO

While some acknowledged her long service to the education sector, a majority voiced strong criticism, calling her leadership “oppressive” and “out of touch” with the plight of teachers. A widely criticized policy during her term was the teacher delocalisation program, which forced educators to work far from their home counties.

“Nancy Macharia broke families under the guise of reform. Her retirement is a blessing,” read one post from a teacher on X (formerly Twitter). Another viral meme prayed that “no human being inherits her traits.”

Calls for a New Direction

Many teachers are now calling for a fresh, more empathetic leadership at the TSC—one that listens to educators and takes into account their welfare. The end of Macharia’s reign is also seen as an example of increasing public scrutiny over powerful state officials.

As TSC prepares for a new CEO, educators and unions are urging the government to appoint a leader who understands the classroom experience and prioritizes the wellbeing of teachers and learners.

Delocalisation and Controversy

The delocalisation policy, introduced under Macharia’s leadership, aimed to improve national cohesion by posting teachers outside their home regions. However, it drew backlash from teachers’ unions and MPs who argued it disrupted families and lacked consultation.

What’s Next for TSC?

With Macharia’s term ending, the education sector is watching closely to see who will succeed her and whether key policies, including delocalisation, will be revised or scrapped entirely.
