Technician Paid Ksh3,000 to Delete Ojwang CCTV Footage

A technician has been arrested in connection with the tampering of CCTV footage related to the controversial death of teacher Albert Ojwang at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Alleged Payment to Erase Evidence

According to police reports, the technician confessed to receiving Ksh3,000 from a senior officer to delete footage from the station’s Digital Video Recorder (DVR) that captured events on June 6 and 7, 2025.

How the Operation Unfolded

The technician, who had originally installed the CCTV system in 2024, said he was summoned early on June 8 and instructed to erase the footage. When he explained that the system could not selectively delete dates, he was told to wipe the entire DVR instead. He claims he never completed the deletion but was still paid for the task.

Flow of Events and Attempts to Replace Evidence

On June 9, the officer called him again to bring a replacement hard drive. However, by the time he arrived, the DVR had already been tampered with. The technician declined to assist further, citing ongoing work and emerging media reports.

More Suspects and Escalating Investigations

The technician is the second suspect arrested in the case. Earlier, Constable James Mukhwana was apprehended by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and is set to face murder charges.

Senate Oversight and Public Pressure

Inspector General Douglas Kanja confirmed in Senate that Ojwang’s arrest was initiated following a complaint by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, whose involvement continues to draw nationwide scrutiny.
