Kiambu County was thrown into mourning after two students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) drowned while swimming in Titanic Dam, Juja sub-county.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as Abel Ontuga Mikaye and Dansteph Matoke, both aged 21 and 22. Their bodies were retrieved by police and local divers after reports from concerned residents around 4 PM on Sunday, March 2.
Incident Under Investigation
The tragic accident occurred at a popular leisure spot known as ‘park and chill’, where outdoor enthusiasts frequent for scenic views and recreational activities. Witnesses say attempts to rescue the students were unsuccessful.
Juja sub-county police officers, led by Central Sub-County Police Commander Doris Kimeli, responded swiftly. She confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to their deaths.
The bodies were taken to General Kago Hospital Mortuary in Thika, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted.
Authorities Warn on Safety Risks
Authorities have since issued a safety warning about the dangers of Titanic Dam, stating that similar incidents have occurred in the past.
“Despite its scenic appeal, Titanic Dam is highly risky, and we advise people to avoid swimming or engaging in activities that could lead to accidents,” said a local official.
Motorists and visitors often park on a sloped area near the water, heightening the risk of accidental slips and falls.
Previous Tragedies at Titanic Dam
This is not the first fatality at the site. In January 2023, a couple drowned when their Nissan X-Trail plunged into the dam. Witnesses claimed an argument preceded the tragic incident, leading the driver to reverse into the water.
Following the latest incident, local leaders and law enforcement have called for enhanced safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
