US Embassy Invites Kenyans to Teach Kiswahili in America

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has officially announced the opening of applications for the 2026–2027 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program, targeting Kiswahili language educators in Kenya.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, April 23, successful applicants will get the opportunity to teach Kiswahili in the U.S. while gaining hands-on experience through a professional and cultural exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

“Apply for the 2026–2027 Fulbright FLTA Program and teach Kiswahili in the U.S. while gaining valuable professional and cultural exchange experience,” the US Embassy stated.

What the Fulbright FLTA Program Offers

The program allows qualified Kenyan graduates and teachers to spend up to one academic year in the United States, assisting in Kiswahili instruction at colleges and universities while enhancing their own teaching and language skills.

In addition to the FLTA program, Kenyan scholars may apply for:

  • The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program
  • The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the FLTA program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Reside in Kenya at the time of application
  • Hold a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s with a strong academic record
  • Have teaching experience or a deep interest in teaching Kiswahili and culture
  • Be fluent in English and demonstrate adaptability and creativity
  • Be willing to live in rural or urban U.S. settings
  • Show professionalism, integrity, and maturity
  • Not hold U.S. citizenship
