If you’re a Kenyan dreaming of life in the United States, the Green Card Lottery—officially known as the Diversity Visa (DV) Program—might be your golden ticket. But to win, your application must be perfect. Here’s everything you need to know to improve your chances of success.

Are Kenyans Eligible for the Green Card Lottery?

Yes, Kenyans are eligible to participate in the DV Lottery. The US government offers 55,000 diversity visas each year to individuals from countries with historically low immigration rates to the US—including Kenya.

Although there’s no minimum age requirement, the program does require either a high school education or at least two years of work experience in a qualifying occupation—meaning applicants are typically over 18.

When and How to Apply

The official DV Lottery application period runs from October to November each year. Late or multiple entries can lead to automatic disqualification.

You can apply directly through the official Electronic Diversity Visa Program website, or use trusted visa support services to avoid disqualification due to minor mistakes.

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Visit the official DV Lottery website or a reliable service provider.
  2. Fill in your personal and travel details accurately.
  3. Upload the required documents, including a passport-size photo meeting strict DV standards.
  4. Submit your application and receive a confirmation number.

This confirmation number is your only way to check the status of your application starting in May the following year.

What Happens If You’re Selected?

Getting selected doesn’t mean you’ve automatically received a visa. It means you can now move forward to the next steps: submitting a formal application, preparing documents, and attending an interview at the US Embassy in Nairobi.

Beware of Scams

The US government will not send emails or messages informing you of your selection. Always verify your status on the official website using your confirmation number.
