President William Ruto is scheduled to make a significant state visit to China from Tuesday, April 22 to Friday, April 26, 2025. This diplomatic tour comes at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to a statement released by the Chinese Embassy in Kenya.

Focus on Infrastructure and Strategic Partnerships

The highlight of Ruto’s visit will be securing additional funding for major infrastructure projects in Kenya, particularly the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to the Ugandan border. This ambitious project is part of a broader plan to improve regional trade and logistics across East and Central Africa.

Strengthening Kenya-China Ties

This state visit also marks a continuation of Kenya’s efforts to enhance its strategic alliance with China, a country that has played a pivotal role in funding African development through trade, investments, and infrastructure.

Ruto’s latest trip follows his participation in the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing in September 2024. During that visit, Ruto and Jinping reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to deepening bilateral relations.

Key Outcomes Expected

  • Extension of the SGR to connect Kenya with Uganda, Rwanda, DRC, and Congo Brazzaville
  • China to fund construction of 15 rural roads under a 2 billion RMB facility
  • Enhanced market access for Kenyan avocados, tea, and coffee in China
  • Support for reforms in the global financial system to favour African countries

Championing Africa’s Voice on the Global Stage

During the High-Quality Belt and Road Cooperation session, President Ruto is expected to advocate for increased financial contributions from multilateral development banks. His goal is to secure more affordable financing options for African nations facing high borrowing costs.

“I urge all my colleagues to participate in this endeavour so as to position Africa’s perspective and ideas appropriately in global discourse,” — President Ruto.

As anticipation builds around this diplomatic engagement, all eyes are on the agreements and deals that could potentially redefine Kenya’s infrastructure, trade, and global alliances.
