Tragedy in Siaya: Two Form Four Students Die After Septic Tank Collapse at Ramba Boys High School
A tragic accident has claimed the lives of two Form Four students at Ramba Boys High School in Rarieda Constituency, Siaya County, after a septic tank collapsed on Thursday evening.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 6:00 PM when several students were standing atop the tank. The structure suddenly gave way, causing a chaotic scene as many students rushed to safety.
Unfortunately, two students were unable to escape and fell into the collapsed tank. Despite efforts by their peers and school staff, the two were fatally trapped beneath the rubble.
A junior teacher at the institution confirmed that most of the students fled unharmed. However, two others sustained injuries and were quickly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Emergency responders, including the Kenya Red Cross and police officers, were deployed to the scene and worked tirelessly through the night to retrieve the students’ bodies. Due to the fragile terrain and structural instability, the recovery operation was both delicate and challenging. The bodies were successfully recovered early the next morning.
Siaya Governor James Orengo has since sent his condolences to the bereaved families, the school fraternity, and the wider Siaya community. In a public statement, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss and promised a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident.
“We mourn the tragic loss of these young lives. As a county, we are committed to ensuring our students’ safety and well-being,” Orengo said.
He also called for unity and calm as the school community comes to terms with the heartbreaking loss, pledging support and counseling services for those affected.
The incident has sparked concern over the state of infrastructure in schools across the region, especially in rural areas. Authorities have promised a comprehensive audit of facilities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
