vatican

Vatican City – On May 8, 2025, the Catholic Church signaled the election of its new leader as white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, marking the conclusion of the papal conclave.

This traditional signal, accompanied by the Latin phrase “Habemus Papam!” (“We have a pope!”), announced the selection of the 267th pontiff, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. Source

Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers upon witnessing the white smoke, a sight that has signified papal elections for centuries. The conclave, comprising 133 cardinals, reached the required two-thirds majority on the fourth ballot over two days of deliberations. Source

A Moment of Reflection

Following the election, the new pope proceeded to the “Room of Tears”, a small chamber adjacent to the Sistine Chapel. Here, he donned the papal vestments for the first time, a moment often filled with emotion and contemplation.

Awaiting the Introduction

As per tradition, the identity of the new pope was not immediately disclosed. The faithful awaited his first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he would be introduced to the world and deliver his inaugural blessing. Source

Continuing the Legacy

The new pope inherits a Church facing numerous challenges, including the need for unity amid ideological divides and addressing global issues such as climate change and social justice. Pope Francis, known for his progressive stances, had appointed a significant number of the current cardinals, potentially influencing the direction of the new papacy. Source

The upcoming days will see the new pope engaging with the faithful and setting the tone for his papacy. A ceremonial Mass will be held to celebrate his ascendancy, and he will begin the work of guiding the Church through contemporary challenges while honoring its rich traditions. Source
