Yatta Member of Parliament Basil Ngui has stated that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i joined the opposition following widespread calls from Kenyans, particularly the youth.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 29, Ngui emphasized that Matiang’i’s track record in public service inspired many to see him as a catalyst for change in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

“The call for Matiang’i to join the opposition was not just from the team but from Kenyans, especially the youth. He reformed the education system, curbing exam rigging and restoring credibility,” Ngui remarked.

Championing Youth-Inspired Change

Ngui highlighted that during Matiang’i’s tenure as Education CS, significant reforms were implemented, leading to a more transparent and credible examination process. This, he noted, resonated with young Kenyans who are eager for accountable leadership.

Contrasting past practices with current events, Ngui criticized the recent distribution of Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment letters at public rallies, a move he believes undermines meritocracy.

A Diverse Opposition Coalition

Matiang’i’s entry into the opposition was marked by a strategic meeting in Nairobi, bringing together key political figures aiming to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. Notable attendees included:

  • Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
  • Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka
  • People’s Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua
  • DAP-K Leader Eugene Wamalwa
  • Former UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi
  • Public Service CS Justin Muturi
  • Former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi

This coalition aims to present a united front to address the nation’s challenges and offer alternative leadership.

Matiang’i’s Potential Presidential Bid

Having returned to Kenya on April 17, Matiang’i has been endorsed by the Jubilee Party as their presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. His candidacy is seen as a significant development in the political landscape, offering voters a seasoned alternative.
