Unrest Sparks After Students Denied Football Viewing

Mbale Boys’ High School in Vihiga County has been shut down indefinitely following a violent riot that broke out on Sunday, May 25. The chaos began after students were reportedly denied permission to watch football matches, igniting a night of destruction and tension.

Property Damaged, Students Injured in Rampage

According to police and school officials, the rampaging students vandalized dormitories, food stores, and even the Deputy Principal’s office. The incident left at least 11 students injured, all of whom were rushed to Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VCRH) for treatment.

Swift Police Response Averts Further Chaos

Police officers from Kilingili, Chavakali, and Mbale stations responded quickly to contain the situation and restore calm within the school compound.

MP Clement Sloya Condemns Riot, Orders Investigation

Sabatia MP Clement Sloya strongly condemned the violence, calling it a disgraceful act of indiscipline that must not be tolerated in any educational institution.

“Such acts of indiscipline and violence have no place in our learning institutions. Schools must be safe havens for growth and character-building, not chaos and destruction,” said Sloya.

Probe Into Causes Underway

The legislator also ordered an independent probe to uncover the root causes of the unrest and promised that those found culpable would be held accountable.

Students’ Medical Care and Future Measures

Sloya reassured the public that he had personally overseen the treatment of the injured students and would continue to monitor their recovery. He emphasized the need for dialogue and understanding to avoid future unrest.

Call for Discipline and Community Support

The MP further praised the police for their quick and professional action and urged the education sector and community to come together in reinforcing discipline and safety in schools.
