Kenya Accuses Tanzania of Blocking Efforts to Release Boniface Mwangi
The Kenyan government has formally raised concerns over Tanzania’s alleged obstruction of efforts to secure the release of detained activist Boniface Mwangi. Mwangi was reportedly arrested and detained by Tanzanian authorities under unclear circumstances, triggering a diplomatic standoff between the two East African nations.
Kenya Frustrated by Lack of Cooperation
In an official protest note dated May 21, 2025, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs expressed disappointment over Tanzania’s reluctance to cooperate in resolving the matter swiftly and diplomatically. The note, addressed to Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, accused Tanzanian officials of ignoring prior communications and failing to provide information about Mwangi’s arrest and current status.
Call for Regional Dialogue and Respect
“The continued detention of Mr. Boniface Mwangi without transparent communication undermines the principles of regional integration and mutual trust within the East African Community (EAC),” the note read in part. Kenyan officials urged their Tanzanian counterparts to uphold shared values and protocols of diplomatic engagement.
Efforts to Secure Release Ongoing
According to Kenyan authorities, all necessary diplomatic channels have been exhausted, including direct appeals through the East African Community Secretariat. However, progress has been slow, with no official response received from Tanzania as of Wednesday morning.
Kenya Renews Commitment to Cooperation
Despite the tensions, Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and respectful resolution. The closing paragraph of the diplomatic note read: “The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of the United Republic of Tanzania the assurances of its highest consideration.”
