High Court Overturns Bail in Charles Ong’ondo Were Murder Investigation

Businessman and political figure Philip Nahashon Aroko has been rearrested in connection with the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament, the late Charles Ong’ondo Were.

A Kibera court had previously granted Aroko a cash bail of Ksh300,000 during the investigation phase of the case. However, on Monday, May 19, the High Court revoked this bail, citing premature release and incomplete investigations.

Bail Conditions Violated?

As part of his initial bail terms, Aroko had been instructed to refrain from contacting co-accused persons, family members, or anyone connected to the murder probe. The prosecution appealed the lower court’s ruling, arguing that more time was needed to finalize the investigation.

In response, High Court Judge Diana Kavedza ruled in favor of the prosecution and ordered Aroko’s immediate arrest. Police successfully tracked him down and placed him back in custody.

Why the Court Reversed Bail

Justice Kavedza emphasized that the earlier ruling undermined the gravity and complexity of the murder case. The judge maintained that a brief extension of police custody would have allowed investigators to complete their work without infringing on Aroko’s constitutional rights.

Background of the Case

The case revolves around the murder of MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, a tragedy that has shocked the Kenyan political scene. Aroko, a businessman with growing political interests, has been a prime suspect in the high-profile probe.

Investigators are expected to continue questioning him and gathering evidence related to the case. A formal trial is anticipated once investigations are completed.
