Swift Action After Outcry
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 12, NPS confirmed that an investigation is underway, led by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) in collaboration with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
“To ensure a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation, the officer in charge of Rwanyambo Police Post has been interdicted with immediate effect,” read the official statement. “Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”
NGEC Demands Accountability
The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) strongly condemned the incident, terming it an “unconscionable tragedy” and calling for urgent reforms within police ranks.
“Pregnancy should be protected — even behind bars. Maternal health must never be collateral damage in law enforcement processes,” NGEC stated, urging gender-responsive policing and specialized training for officers handling vulnerable groups.
Growing Pressure for Change
This case has sparked renewed calls for justice and accountability within Kenya’s law enforcement system, especially for expectant women and other special interest groups in custody.
NGEC further urged NPS and IPOA to provide an independent and transparent assessment and hold all responsible parties to account. “Enough is enough,” the Commission declared.
The incident adds to ongoing scrutiny of police conduct in Kenya amid public calls for humane treatment and better oversight in the country’s justice system.
More updates are expected as investigations progress.
