Kenya’s leading mobile service provider, Safaricom, has rolled out a new update to its M-PESA app, allowing users to withdraw funds directly from PayPal. This move aims to make life easier for thousands of Kenyan freelancers and remote workers receiving payments from international clients.

A Game Changer for Digital Freelancers

The new feature eliminates the need to log into web portals or use third-party services for PayPal–M-PESA transfers. Kenyan online workers many of whom earn through platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and direct contracts can now enjoy faster and more seamless access to their money.

Previously, withdrawing funds from PayPal to M-PESA involved cumbersome steps and could take hours or even days. This integration with the M-PESA app removes the hassle, aligning perfectly with Kenya’s mobile-first economy.

How to Withdraw PayPal Funds via the M-PESA App

  1. Update your M-PESA app to the latest version via Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Open the app and navigate to the “PayPal” option under Finance or Global Services.
  3. Securely log in to your PayPal account when prompted.
  4. Link your M-PESA and PayPal accounts (if not already linked).
  5. Enter the amount to withdraw and review the displayed fees and exchange rates.
  6. Confirm the transaction and wait for the funds—typically arriving within minutes.

Secure and Reliable Transfers

This update is powered by Thunes, the same backend provider that supports the existing PayPal–M-PESA web service. Safaricom assures users of robust fraud protection, data privacy, and regulatory compliance with every transaction.

Users are advised to perform withdrawals only via the official M-PESA app to avoid scams or unauthorized platforms mimicking the process.

Empowering Kenya’s Digital Workforce

“This feature is more than just a convenience—it’s a vital step towards supporting Kenya’s thriving digital economy,” said Moses Nderitu, Safaricom’s Managing Director for Kenya.

With plans to expand such integrations, Safaricom continues to play a pivotal role in facilitating cross-border payments and boosting financial inclusion for Kenyans working online.
