Fresh Impeachment Motion Filed Against Kericho Governor Erick Mutai

Pressure is once again building around Governor Erick Mutai as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) make a new move to impeach him.

Sigowet MCA Leads the New Push

On Wednesday morning, Sigowet Ward MCA Hon. Kiproitch Rogony submitted a fresh motion to the Clerk of the Kericho County Assembly. The motion includes evidence and signatures from MCAs who support the governor’s removal from office.

In his letter, Rogony noted that the motion follows the correct procedures under Standing Order No. 70. The Clerk has already confirmed receipt and forwarded it to the Assembly’s Division Committee for scheduling.

Second Time MCAs Are Trying to Impeach Mutai

This is not the first time Governor Mutai is facing impeachment. A previous motion earlier this year failed after it was supported by only 31 out of 47 MCAs — one vote short of the two-thirds (32) needed to pass.

That earlier vote was weakened after 16 MCAs who support the governor skipped the session. Governor Mutai then went to court and got an order blocking the Assembly from sending the resolution to the Senate.

Even after the Assembly pushed the matter forward, the Senate threw it out, saying the process was not done properly and had legal flaws.

This Time, the MCAs Say They Are More Prepared

According to sources within the Assembly, this second attempt is more organized. More evidence has been collected, and MCAs backing the motion believe it will survive legal challenges and gather the 32 votes required.

Governor Yet to Speak Out

Governor Mutai has not issued a public statement about this latest motion. However, in the past, he has called such efforts political and accused some MCAs of using impeachment for personal or political gain.

His government has been under pressure over claims of poor leadership, frosty relations with MCAs, and concerns about transparency in handling county matters.

What Happens Next?

The Kericho County Assembly is expected to announce when the motion will be officially tabled for debate. If it passes the Assembly vote, it will be sent to the Senate for a final decision, as required by the County Governments Act.

The next few days will be crucial for Governor Mutai’s political future, as the second impeachment attempt moves forward with growing support.
