CS Murkomen Scraps Ksh300 ID Fee, Announces Free Passport Document Verification

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has officially scrapped the Ksh300 application fee for national identity cards, implementing a directive issued by President William Ruto. The changes were formalized through a special Gazette Notice published on Wednesday, March 19.

Speaking in Shabab, Nakuru County, Murkomen further announced the removal of fees previously charged for document verification during ID and passport applications.

“Kenyans were being asked to pay Ksh500 for document verification. From now on, this process will be free,” the CS stated.

Murkomen emphasized that verification is a government responsibility and citizens should not bear additional costs for accessing essential services.

Additionally, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating extra vetting procedures, which he termed discriminatory and a barrier for many Kenyans seeking identification and travel documents.

The removal of these fees aligns with the administration’s broader push to streamline public services and enhance accessibility for all citizens.
