Government to Deliver 17,000 New Housing Units for Kenya’s Security Forces

Kenya News— In a step toward improving the welfare of its uniformed personnel, the Kenyan government has committed to constructing 17,000 housing units for members of the Disciplined Forces under the national affordable housing initiative.

Interior CS Murkomen inspects the stalled Kajiado police housing project, set to resume under the affordable housing plan.

Murkomen Pledges Completion in Six Months

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the project during a tour of stalled housing units at the Kajiado Police Station. The two-block development, each containing 100 units, began in 2017 but later stalled. Murkomen now says the houses will be completed within the next six months.

“We are ensuring that members of our security forces live in dignified housing. These 17,000 homes will mark a new chapter for the men and women who protect this country,” he stated.

Poor Housing Conditions Raised During Security Forums

Murkomen revealed that concerns over poor accommodation had emerged prominently during the Jukwaa la Usalama town hall engagements. These forums provide a platform for security officers to voice challenges they face in the line of duty.

“More than 60 percent of our police stations are remnants of the colonial era. It is an indictment, and we must correct it. In two years, we aim to modernize over half of these facilities,” he added.

Additional Infrastructure Support

In addition to the housing units, the CS announced that the government will drill a borehole to serve both the newly constructed homes and the broader Kajiado Police Station complex. This forms part of the broader infrastructure upgrade under the housing initiative.

Top Officials Present During Inspection

Murkomen was joined by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni, APS Director of Operations Jackson Kangani, and Kajiado County Commissioner Taari Rwaria. Also present were Kajiado Deputy Governor Martin Moshisho, and area MPs Memusi Kanchori, Kakuta Maimai, and Sakimpa Parashina.

This large-scale housing project underscores the government’s renewed focus on enhancing living standards for police officers and ensuring long-term infrastructure development for the security sector in Kenya.
