Gov’t Launches NYOTA Project to Empower Unemployed Youth With Real Job Experience

The government has unveiled an ambitious new program aimed at tackling youth unemployment and equipping young Kenyans with hands-on job experience and mentorship opportunities.

The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project was launched on Tuesday, July 15, by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The initiative features an On-the-Job Experience (OJE) component designed to prepare youth for employment in Kenya’s competitive job market.

What the NYOTA Project Offers

Targeting unemployed youth across all 47 counties, the program provides:

  • Hands-on workplace learning in real environments
  • Mentorship from industry professionals
  • Business and digital skills training
  • A nationally recognized certificate
  • Improved employability and access to job opportunities

“The NYOTA Project aims to give young people practical skills and confidence to thrive in the workplace,” the Ministry said in its announcement.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be aged 18–29 (or up to 35 for persons with disabilities)
  • Be unemployed or working in low-income/vulnerable jobs
  • Have a Form 4 level of education or below

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

How to Apply

Interested youth are encouraged to apply by dialing *254# on their phones, selecting the NYOTA Project option, and following the instructions.

Applications are open from Friday, July 11, to Friday, August 15.

The Ministry emphasized that the NYOTA Project is completely free, warning applicants not to pay any fees to anyone claiming to offer assistance.

A Step Towards Reducing Youth Unemployment

Kenya’s youth unemployment rate remains a major challenge, with recent statistics showing over 35% of young people out of work. Programs like NYOTA are designed to bridge the skills gap and empower youth to become self-reliant.

This initiative aligns with the government’s Vision 2030 goals of creating a globally competitive and prosperous Kenya by fostering youth empowerment and economic inclusion.
