James Orengo Breaks Silence, Addresses Health Rumors in First Public Appearance
SIAYA, Kenya – Siaya Governor James Orengo has publicly addressed his health for the first time since June, dismissing speculation about his condition and alleged poisoning.
First Appearance Since June
Orengo appeared on Friday, August 8, 2025, at the burial of former Karachuonyo MP Phoebe Asiyo in Homa Bay County. Speaking in Luo, the Governor reassured residents that he was in good health.
“I, Orengo, son of the bull, am alive. I, Orengo, with the strength of a stone, am not going anywhere,” he declared to cheers from the crowd.
Eulogizing Phoebe Asiyo
The Governor used the occasion to pay tribute to the late Phoebe Asiyo, describing her as a trailblazer in the fight for human and women’s rights in Kenya.
“If we trace the movement for human rights and the idea that women’s rights are human rights, Phoebe Asiyo was ahead of her time. She started that struggle before independence and kept going,” Orengo said.
Rumors and Speculation
Orengo’s last public appearance was on June 23, 2025, when he faced the Senate Public Accounts Committee. His absence fueled online speculation, including a fake resignation letter and claims that he had been poisoned at a past public event.

Officials Dismiss Poisoning Claims
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode dismissed the poisoning allegations, stating that Orengo was abroad for personal reasons.
Deputy Governor William Oduol also rubbished the claims, confirming that the Governor was unwell but receiving treatment.
“The Governor is just sick and under treatment. The poisoning speculations are mean and malicious,” Oduol said.
Return to Public Life
Orengo reportedly returned to Kenya on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, and his Karachuonyo appearance marked his first official event since his return. His firm dismissal of the health rumors appears aimed at reassuring Siaya residents of his leadership stability.
