Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua landed at JKIA on Thursday, receiving a hero’s welcome from thousands of supporters before leading a city procession towards Kamukunji grounds.
A Grand Arrival
The Democratic for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly after noon, August 21, following a six-week stay in the United States. Security was tight, but that did not deter the thousands who turned up from early morning to welcome him home.
Photos seen by The Star showed massive crowds, largely youth, carrying banners in DCP colors with messages such as “Welcome Home Mfalme.”
Chants of ‘Wantam’ Fill the Air
As Gachagua waved to the crowds, his trademark slogan “Wantam” echoed across the highways leading into Nairobi. The chant, often used to signal opposition to President William Ruto’s re-election, became the defining sound of the homecoming.
DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala joined the celebrations, captured atop his vehicle vibing with the supporters and singing along to the “Wantam” anthem.
Procession Through Nairobi
The convoy snaked its way from JKIA into the Nairobi CBD, making stopovers where jubilant supporters lined the streets. The final destination is Kamukunji grounds, where Gachagua is expected to address a major political rally later in the day.
Political Leaders Join the Welcome
Several leaders including Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangw’a were present at JKIA, underscoring the significance of Gachagua’s return to Kenya’s political stage.
