Ruto’s Govt to Pay Ksh6,000 Monthly to 90,000 Youth Under NYOTA Project
Cabinet Approves NYOTA Project Targeting Unemployed Youth
The Kenyan Cabinet on Tuesday, July 29, approved the rollout of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project. The program is expected to benefit over 820,000 vulnerable and unemployed youth, including persons with disabilities.
According to an official Cabinet Dispatch, the project is a collaboration between the Government of Kenya and the World Bank. It is a strategic initiative under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda aimed at improving access to decent work, skills certification, and entrepreneurship support for young people.
Stipends of Ksh6,000 to Be Deposited via Haba Haba Accounts
The program’s flagship component is the On-the-Job Experience programme, which is currently accepting applications from eligible youth. The government targets 90,000 youth for paid internships lasting between three to six months. Each participant will receive a monthly stipend of Ksh6,000, which will be deposited directly into their Haba Haba savings accounts.
“The ongoing call for the On-the-Job Experience programme targets 90,000 youth for three- to six-month paid placements with employers, with monthly stipends of KSh6,000 deposited into Haba Haba savings accounts,” read the Cabinet brief.
NYOTA’s Four Strategic Components
The NYOTA Project is structured around four key components:
- Paid on-the-job training and work experience
- Entrepreneurship support for youth-led businesses
- Certification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
- Strengthening access to labor markets for youth
Application Deadline and Funding Update
Applications for the NYOTA program opened on July 11, 2025, and will close on August 15, 2025. Interested individuals are advised to apply early through official government platforms to secure their slots.
Earlier this month, MSMEs Principal Secretary Susan Mang’eni told the National Assembly Committee on Trade that the program faced initial rollout delays due to budget constraints. She revealed that while Ksh1.2 billion had been secured, an additional Ksh7.6 billion is still required to fully implement the project nationwide.
