Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi has issued a stern warning to politicians, urging them to refrain from inciting chaos at the burial of former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati. Speaking on Sunday, March 2, Oyagi emphasized that while the region has a history of violence, strict directives are in place to maintain peace during the funeral proceedings.
Clear Directives for a Peaceful Funeral
Commissioner Oyagi cautioned political figures by saying,
“We are known for having goons, but we have enough orders. If you cause chaos on that day due to political affiliations, I know every security officer working with those politicians. Attend the funeral alone, pay your respects, and then go home.”
A Call for Unity and Respect
In a heartfelt appeal, Chebukati’s wife, Mary Chebukati, also called on mourners and political leaders alike to honor her late husband’s legacy of a quiet and respectful life.
“Mr. Chebukati led a nice, quiet, and respectful life, and I know you will show him the same respect,” she said.
Rising Tensions Amidst Tragic Events
The warning was issued shortly after a dramatic incident unfolded at the home of the late Malava MP Moses Malulu Injendi. During a visit to pay respects ahead of Injendi’s burial, Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya was forced to flee when a group of rowdy residents disrupted his address. According to media reports, the situation escalated when locals chanting pro-President William Ruto slogans interrupted the governor, booed him, and even hurled projectiles. The disturbance led to Natembeya and his entourage retreating from the scene.
The family of the late MP had clearly stated their wish for a peaceful farewell. At a recent requiem service, Injendi’s son, Melvin Malulu, announced that only President Ruto, the family, and church representatives would be permitted to speak during the burial.
Looking Forward
As the community braces for the burial of Wafula Chebukati, authorities remain committed to upholding peace and preventing any disruptions that could further inflame tensions. The hope is that all attendees, regardless of political leanings, will come together to honor Chebukati’s memory respectfully.
