DCI Reveals Why Ex-KDF Soldier Patrick Osoi and Activist Cop Shakur Were Arrested
Kenya News – The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has shed light on the recent arrests of former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier Patrick Osoi and activist Jackson Kuria Kihara, widely known as Cop Shakur.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, July 30, the DCI confirmed that Osoi was apprehended along Lang’ata Road while Cop Shakur was arrested in Kahawa West, Nairobi.
Charges Under the Prevention of Terrorism Act
Patrick Osoi was reportedly found in possession of a firearm and was charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012. He was arraigned before the Kahawa Law Courts and is currently detained at Muthaiga Police Station awaiting a ruling on custodial orders, scheduled for Thursday, July 31, 2025.
“Osoi was today arraigned… and faced charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012, and for being in possession of a firearm, among other offences,” read the DCI statement.
Why Cop Shakur Was Arrested
The DCI further revealed that Cop Shakur was found wearing a red beret with an FBI symbol, which authorities are linking to the controversial activities of the newly-formed Fighting Brutality and Impunity (FBI) Movement.
He is expected to be arraigned at the Kahawa Law Courts on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
What is the FBI Movement?
The arrests come just days after Osoi, Cop Shakur, and Police Constable Hiram Kimathi launched the FBI movement, which seeks to defend victims of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Kenya.
“We present ourselves to fight for the rights of every Kenyan mistreated by the police… Our mandate is to bring justice to our people, and we will fight tooth and nail to achieve it,” said Osoi during the launch of the movement.
The movement also claims to represent disenfranchised police officers and civilians affected by alleged systemic injustices.
What Happens Next?
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has indicated that investigations are ongoing. Both suspects remain in custody as authorities seek extended detention to complete the probe.
