Several Feared Dead in Royal Liner Bus Accident on Kisumu-Busia Highway

Tragedy struck on Monday evening when a Royal Liner bus was involved in a horrific crash along the Kisumu–Busia highway, leaving several people feared dead and many others injured.

Witnesses reported that the bus was attempting to overtake at a sharp corner near Lela in Maseno when it was hit from behind by a flatbed trailer. A fuel tanker was also caught up in the multi-vehicle collision.Images and videos from the scene showed the driver’s side of the bus completely scraped off from the impact, with debris scattered across the road. First responders, including police officers, could be seen aiding survivors, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals, and managing crowds gathering at the site.

A Series of Tragic Road Accidents

This latest crash comes barely a day after another long-distance passenger bus, operated by ENA Coach, was involved in a fatal accident. In that incident, a trailer lost its brakes and rammed into the bus near the Escarpments area in Mai Mahiu. The bus, travelling from Nairobi to Migori, overturned, killing an adult female passenger and a minor.

In another eerily similar tragedy in the same region, a school bus ferrying mourners overturned at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu–Kakamega Road. The August 8 accident left 21 people dead on the spot, with the death toll later rising to 26 as more victims succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Preliminary investigations indicated that the driver lost control, causing the bus to veer off the highway and overturn.

Authorities are urging motorists to drive cautiously, especially in high-risk areas, as investigations into these back-to-back accidents continue.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
