Silence of Mt Kenya CSs Leaves Ruto Exposed Ahead of Key By-elections
President William Ruto’s plan to consolidate political loyalty in Mt Kenya by appointing a lineup of loyal Cabinet Secretaries is facing fresh scrutiny. With looming by-elections and a resurgent Rigathi Gachagua, the silence of these CSs is becoming increasingly noticeable—and politically costly.
Post-Gachagua Strategy Falling Flat?
Following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in October last year, Ruto sought to counterbalance his influence by bringing in regional heavyweights like Mutahi Kagwe, Lee Kinyanjui, and William Kabogo into key positions.
These appointments were part of a larger strategy to shore up support in Mt Kenya counties such as Nyeri, Kiambu, and Nakuru, with the help of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
Muted Voices from Mt Kenya
Despite the high expectations, several of these Cabinet Secretaries have steered clear of active politics. Alice Wahome, once a fiery MP for Kandara, has gone unusually quiet. Kagwe and Kinyanjui, both seasoned former governors, are also keeping a low profile, focusing solely on their official roles.
This collective silence especially when it comes to countering Gachagua has sparked criticism. According to political analyst Dr Charles Ng’ang’a, many of the leaders tapped by Ruto had already lost significant grassroots support prior to their appointments.
By-elections a Litmus Test for Ruto
With by-elections approaching in areas like Mbeere North, the stakes are rising. Gachagua, still enjoying a wave of sympathy among Mt Kenya voters, poses a growing threat to Ruto’s regional grip.

Mt Kenya voters are known for their political unity—but not necessarily for blind loyalty to state appointments. So far, only William Kabogo has dared to challenge Gachagua openly, raising concerns over the effectiveness of Ruto’s picks.
Has Ruto Miscalculated Mt Kenya Politics?
As the by-elections draw closer, it’s becoming evident that the silence from Mt Kenya Cabinet Secretaries may be working in Gachagua’s favor. Without vocal support from his chosen lieutenants, Ruto’s influence in the region appears vulnerable.
For a region that delivered over 2.8 million votes in the 2022 elections, the growing disconnect between appointed leaders and the electorate could spell trouble for the president’s 2025 ambitions.
