Why Khalif Kairo Is Back in Court: Tax Fraud and Car Scam Claims
Controversial city car dealer Khalif Kairo has been charged with tax fraud amounting to KSh1.2 million, marking yet another legal battle linked to alleged car import scams.
Attempt to Leave Kenya Foiled
According to police sources, Kairo had booked a flight to New York scheduled for January 12, 2025. He allegedly told investigators that the trip was aimed at securing funds to clear his financial obligations and return to resolve the ongoing issues.
Facing Charges for Multiple Fraud Cases
On January 29, Kairo appeared before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi at the Milimani Law Courts, where he pleaded not guilty to accusations of defrauding Dan Odhiambo Odundo of KSh3.04 million.
The businessman allegedly promised to import a Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 from Japan through his company, Kai & Karo Limited, knowing that the claims were false.
More Complaints Surface
This isn’t the first time Kairo has been in the spotlight. In a separate case filed earlier in January, he was accused of conning another client, Jeff Kyule Munane, out of KSh2.15 million for a promised Honda Vezel Hybrid.
Additionally, in July 2024, he allegedly received KSh2.9 million from Dona Ayalo Okoth for a Subaru Outback that was never delivered.
Legal Troubles Mount
With a trail of disgruntled clients and pending legal battles, Kairo’s reputation in the car import business is under intense scrutiny. Authorities have warned potential customers to remain vigilant and ensure due diligence when engaging in high-value vehicle import transactions.
