DCI Officer Arrested After Shooting Two Boda Boda Riders in Thika

A dramatic scene unfolded in Thika, Kiambu County, on Saturday morning after a Nairobi-based Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer was arrested for shooting and killing two boda boda riders following a road accident.

Police reports indicate the officer, suspected to have been intoxicated, rammed into a motorcycle in Makongeni, injuring both the rider and his passenger. The incident quickly escalated when a crowd of boda boda operators confronted him over the crash.

Shooting Sparks Violence

During the heated exchange, the detective drew his firearm and opened fire, killing two riders instantly. Enraged witnesses and fellow operators retaliated by torching the officer’s Audi vehicle, leaving it completely burnt out as thick smoke filled the air.

Thika West Sub-County Police Commander Lawrence Muchangi confirmed the arrest, saying the officer, who appeared drunk, was disarmed on the spot. His weapon has been confiscated as evidence and he is currently in custody at Thika Police Station.

The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to General Kago Mortuary.

Boda Boda Association Condemns Violence

The Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) strongly condemned the incident and recent cases of violence linked to the motorcycle taxi sector. In a statement, national chairman Kevin B. Mubadi said the attacks and destruction of property were often carried out by individuals posing as boda boda operators.

“These acts of violence do not represent genuine operators. The boda boda sector is a pillar of Kenya’s transport system and a source of livelihood for thousands of families,” Mubadi said.

He urged riders nationwide to uphold discipline, lawful conduct, and safeguard the reputation of the industry, which serves millions of commuters daily.
