Edwin Sifuna: Why I Would Quit ODM if It Supports Ruto in 2027
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has publicly stated that he would resign from his position if the party throws its weight behind President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
While addressing residents in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County, on Sunday, August 3, Sifuna said he would continue to read all ODM statements regardless of their tone except one endorsing Ruto’s re-election bid.
“That’s Where I Draw the Line,” Sifuna Declares
“I am ready to read any ODM press release even if it insults me but the day the party declares support for William Ruto, I won’t read that statement. Before you and before God, I can’t stand for that,” said Sifuna, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The Nairobi Senator jokingly told Nyando MP Jared Okello to prepare to take over as Secretary General in case the party makes such a move.
“They’ll need a new SG. I’ve heard Jared Okello is up to the task because he speaks polished English. Okello, get ready, because if ODM ever endorses Ruto, I’m out,” he added.
Sifuna’s Unwavering Opposition to Ruto
Sifuna has been among the fiercest critics of President Ruto’s administration and its agreement with ODM. In a TV interview on July 22, he said that removing Ruto from office should be a national priority.
“This government has no respect for the Constitution or human rights. For that reason, ousting President Ruto is the top agenda for the country,” Sifuna asserted.
Raila Odinga Backs Internal Debate
In response to Sifuna’s remarks, ODM leader Raila Odinga weighed in on July 25, saying the party allows internal criticism and differences of opinion.
“Every party member has a right to express their views. That’s what democracy looks like. If Sifuna has an opinion, he’s free to express it. If someone disagrees, they can also speak out,” said Odinga.
As political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 elections, Sifuna’s firm stance signals deepening tension within the opposition ranks over the future of ODM’s political alliances.
