Gachagua Demands Arrest of Police Officers After Chaos Erupts in Murang’a
Murang’a, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has demanded immediate action against police officers and individuals who reportedly teargassed a group of opposition leaders during a church event in Murang’a County.
Police Teargas Gachagua’s Allies in Murang’a
On Sunday, July 27, tension escalated in Ngonda Shopping Center as officers allegedly acting on orders fired teargas and used force to disperse Gachagua’s allies who had gathered after a church service. Several leaders, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu, were forced to flee for safety as live rounds were also reportedly fired.

Gachagua Points Finger at Ruto and Murkomen
In a strongly worded statement, Gachagua claimed that the operation was sanctioned by President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, branding the police as “state-sponsored militia”. He accused them of violently attacking citizens and leaders in a bid to suppress dissent.
“This is not just intimidation—it’s state-sponsored violence. What happened in Murang’a was an outright attack on our Constitution and on the rights of citizens to assemble and worship freely,” Gachagua said.
“Barbaric and Dictatorial,” Gachagua Lashes Out
The former Deputy President described the event as a “barbaric” act that reflects a deep-rooted disdain for the Constitution by the current administration.
“President Ruto, this is violence against the very soul of our nation. You opposed the Constitution in 2010, and your actions today prove you still haven’t embraced it,” he remarked.
Calls for Accountability and Justice
Gachagua urged the immediate arrest and prosecution of officers involved, calling them “criminals misused by the state.” He also warned senior government officials that justice, though sometimes delayed, will eventually be served.
“Justice will catch up with you. Today you may think you’re powerful, but no regime lasts forever,” he added.
Leaders Injured, Vehicles Damaged
The Sunday chaos left several injured and caused damage to property. Senator Methu’s vehicle was among those damaged as officers blocked major roads, disrupting planned rallies in Kigumo and other parts of the county.
What’s Next for Kenya’s Political Landscape?
This incident adds fuel to the ongoing political friction within Kenya Kwanza and raises concerns over the shrinking democratic space in Kenya. As Gachagua continues to challenge the status quo, tensions are expected to intensify in the run-up to the 2027 general election.
